Pink Floyd rules
I hadnt listened to any English music before I came to IITM. I never understood the lyrics and felt that it was just noise. I was an avid bollywood music lover. After coming here, especially in third year and after being introduced to the phenomenon of PINK FLOYD through one of their most famous songs, Another Brick In The Wall, I got hooked on to it and started listening to other songs of them. The thing about Pink Floyd is that the first time you hear it, it doesnt really attract you that much, but after some time you just can get enough of it. You end up listening to the same song over and over again till you cant take it anymore. It has happened to almost all Pink Floyd songs I have heard till now. People have told me that it is a phase. That even they had the same experience, and finally had to stop listening to Floyd because their songs depressed them a lot.
Cant really point out my favourite among them. Brick in The Wall, Comfortably Numb, Learning to Fly and Wish you were Here are all equally good, so are Dark Side of the Moon, High Hopes, and Echoes. Each song hold you in a trance for a certain period of time, during which you listen to only that.
I am no expert in English music, but I think there is no band quite like Pink Floyd who use a lot of electronic equipment. In one of videos the lead singer at that time, David Gilmore said he feared that the band would become over-dependant on their instrument. His voice in a way charecterizes their songs, a deep, husky voice which gives a sombre and grave mood to the songs.
In school i believed that people who listened to English music were just blindly following the "American culture", but now I see that These guys are good

oh and trust me, you will not celebrate your stanford schol/ getting a job you like by having floyd songs in the background! they rule your free time for abt a year but then it does get depressing. but still they are the best i've heard...BY A MILE
strangely floyd are really popular in the iit's for some reason, and other ppl of our age find them out-dated
p.s. - now you might 'celebrate' by listening to floyd if you have to settle for a high-paying 'shit job' :P
